The United States Food and Drug Administration approved SPRAVATO® for adults with treatment-resistant depression. SPRAVATO® is also administered together with an oral antidepressant.
You’re considered to be treatment-resistant when your depression doesn’t improve after taking several courses of antidepressants. About 30% of adults who take antidepressants don’t respond to their medications.
SPRAVATO® is classified as an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist. NMDA antagonists relieve depression by balancing the levels of a neurotransmitter called glutamate.
Other antidepressant medications also affect glutamate, but they follow an indirect pathway that takes weeks to produce results if they lead to symptom improvement.
By comparison, SPRAVATO® directly affects glutamate, allowing it to produce quick results and improve your depression when other antidepressants have failed.

Most patients are good candidates for SPRAVATO®. However, you may not be able to take it if you have certain vascular conditions or you’re hypersensitive to esketamine.

You can only take SPRAVATO® when you’re in the office. Your provider at Neuro Wellness TMS Centers of America shows you how to administer the medication, you spray it into your nose, and then you relax in the treatment room.
Your provider closely monitors you for two hours after you take SPRAVATO®. This extra care is essential due to the medication’s potential side effects, such as changes in blood pressure, sleepiness, dizziness, anxiety, and nausea.
SPRAVATO® may also cause dissociation, which is a feeling that you’re disconnected from time or your own thoughts and feelings.
After you’re cleared to leave the office, you’ll need someone to drive you home. You should avoid any activity that requires coordination or mental alertness until the next day.
